Only Lovers Left Alive

In a distorted  atmosphere, a perfect cast transports  us into a story that basically talks about love, with the alternative nature typical of Jim Jarmush.

To crown this feeling almost otherworldly are ethnic music and night environments to carry us into the world of Adam and Eve.

Adam (Tom Hiddleston) is a centuries-old vampire.  He is a rocker, with a passion for antique instruments and guitars from the best decades of rock. He composes and records music. Thanks to his friend Ian (Anton Yelchin) who completely ignores his secret,  Adam manages to reach his music to the world without exposing himself.

Adam lives in Detroit as recluse, surrounded by his music and pictures of old died friends as Oscar Wilde. The only exception is when, disguised as a doctor, he goes to the hospital to stock “0-negative” thermos.

He can’t break away completely from the past … it is proved by his phone: definitely 70’s or 80’s in which he made a connection with a 60’s television in order to be used for video calls.

On the other hand we have Eve (Tilda Swinton), his longtime girlfriend. She lives in Tangiers (one hell of a long-distance relationship!) and she is in love with the life and the new century. Her video calls come from the iPhone.

With her (in the same city) lives her and Adam best friend:  Christopher Marlowe, no less. He is also her blood supplier, the good one “because in the new century you have to be careful, there are a lot of contaminations”.

When Adam’s depression, which is essential for artists, becomes dangerously deep, Eve decides to join him in Detroit.

Shortly after the couple is reached by Eve’s sister, Eva (Mia Wasikowska). Vampire out of control. In a short time, she drains Adam’s  blood supply and bleeds Ian.

With Ian death, Adam and Eve have to leave Detroit. But they will find a bitter surprise waiting for them…

Only Lovers Left Alive is eccentric but it is deeply romantic in its own way.

Few speeches and many whispers… even the few wrangles  are made of angry gestures but always in a whisper. For example when Eve founds the gun with the wood bullet and puts it in front of herself to arouse Adam’s reaction.

But there is music, wonderful music. There are books and the history of literature. There is the moon and an old theatre… there are romantic memories and most of all, there is Love because, at the end, Only Lovers Left Alive.
