When Berlin meets the world:Ku’damm 77 World Premiere at MIPCOM in Cannes

Under the spotlight of MIPCOM’s grand opening, Ku’damm 77 claimed center stage last night with its world premiere in the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals. The event served both as a glamorous screening and as the official launch of the series to global buyers, press, and industry insiders.
Set against the backdrop of a divided Berlin, Ku’damm 77 picks up the Schöllack family saga in 1977. The new chapter revisits the venerable dance school Galant on Kurfürstendamm, exploring themes of freedom, identity, rebellion, and the tension between tradition and change. Through three generations under one roof, the series confronts generational conflicts, social expectations, and personal reinvention.

As announced by ZDF Studios and UFA Fiction, the series continues the narrative legacy of Ku’damm 56, 59, and 63, which have been broadcast in over 30 countries and earned an International Emmy nomination.

Audience reaction was immediate: the cinematic quality, period detail, and emotional gravitas sparked buzz even before the screening ended. Buyers and press alike seemed eager to probe : Ku’damm 77 didn’t just debut; it planted a flag. Moving forward, the series will carry more weight than its narrative: it’s a strategic statement. ZDF and UFA are not just entering the market; they’re angling for prominence in it. The themes of women’s voices, generational change, and sociopolitical tension fit neatly into global conversations about identity and memory.

This premiere wasn’t just a red carpet evening; it was another signal of how German storytelling continues to stretch its reach. As Ku’damm 77 sets out from Cannes, the true test will be in how its story resonates across cultures, markets, and hearts.

The premiere was followed by a Q&A with creator Annette Hess, director Maurice Hübner, producers, and cast.

“The selection of Ku’damm 77 for a World Premiere Screening in Cannes proves the importance of German drama series in this top‑class international arena. ZDF Studios is proud of this appealing addition to its drama catalogue” said Markus Schäfer, President and CEO of ZDF Studios.
