BIFA 2017: What a night for God’s Own Country and Josh O’Connor

Under a magical snowfall, the British Independent Film Awards were awarded to the best of British and International Independent cinema. The ceremony, one of the last great London events of the year, saw, on its 20th Anniversary, the triumph of God’s Own Country by Francis Lee winning best actor for Josh O’Connor (The Riot Club, Farragut North on stage, The Program) and best debut screenwriter for writer- director Francis Lee.

Lady Macbeth, one of the most loved movie from 2016 London Film Festival was another big winner of the night, taking home the awards for best actress for Florence Pugh, best newcomer for Naomie Ackie and best screenplay for Alice Birch.

Four awards for Death of Stalin by Armando Iannucci: best supporting actor for Simon Russell Beale, best casting for Sarah Crowe, best make-up & hair for Nicole Stafford and best production design for Cristina Casali.

Best International Independent Film 2017 is American horror Get Out by Jordan Peele.

During the long snowy evening, Gary Oldman was honored with the  Variety Award by Kristin Scott Thomas while the Richard Harris Award for outstanding contribution to British film by an actor was presented to Vanessa Redgrave by Jared Harris and Redgrave’s daughter Joely Richardson.

At the ceremony also Christian Slater, Raindance founder Elliott Grove and long listed short Edith’s director and British outstanding actor Christian Cooke.
